My father went to Camp Lown. We even have an old Bentcher and Song Book. I'd like to find the exact location in Oakland so we can visit this August. (I don't know the exact year he went, but he was born in '37) - Ari Jacobson arijacobsonlaw@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteYou can find out more about the location by contacting the Documenting Maine Jewry project here: http://www.mainejews.org -- enjoy your visit!
ReplyDeleteThere was also a Jewish Camp in Vermont named Lake Fairlee Camp on Lake Fairlee in Ely, VT. The Town of Fairlee, Vermont, which includes the Village of Ely, is located in the "Woodstock-Quechee" region of the state, between the Connecticut River and the Green Mountains.
ReplyDeleteLake Fairlee Camp was an overnight summer camp following the Conservative tradition in the 1960s. It was also kosher and observed Jewish holidays and Shabbat. The camp grounds and cabins were and are still beautiful. The views of Lake Fairlee from the Main Lodge and from the camp beach are forever etched in my memory. I vividly remember dressing in white clothes for Shabbat and then, if it was raining, going body-surfing through the mud to the large rock in front of the Lodge.
My recollection is that few Vermont children attended the camp. Campers and counselors came from NH, NJ, NY, MA, ME and some southern states. Many came from overseas. Counselors were from all over the world and were also artists, musicians and theatre performers. There were many summer youth competitions against other summer camps around the lake. Many trips to Hanover for arts and theatre at the Hopkin Center for the Arts. Long canoe and sailing rides. Hiking around the area and into Post Mills. The camp was under the splendid direction of Herb & Marion Kummel. Herb's background included dance and Marion's included fine arts.
I would love to know if former campers are connecting on social media platforms. Lake Fairlee Camp was a truly wonderful summer camp for Jewish youth.
I attended LFC before 1962, coming from Northern Virginia. There were some Vermonters at the camp, but it was, as you remember, very cosmopolitan. Because of Herb's past as a dancer, there were visiting ballet troupes and lots of artists and musicians. Loved the camp, although there was a bit of a "me too" issue. The waterfront was run by Jimmy and Roz Lewisohn-- an interesting Google in itself. Herb was unmarried, and I am pleased to learn from your post of his family. I have never heard from any other former camper on a social media platform. I only was looking around today because a granddaughter is going to be working near Thetford Center this summer, and it reminded me of Lake Fairlee Camp.

ReplyDeleteI grew up in Rhode Island, and went to Camp Lown in 1965 or 66. I was the youngest camper (6 or 7) allowed only because my two older brothers were there (my parents must really have needed some time off!). I remember picking blueberries by the lake and bringing our bucket to the kitchen where the cook would make us pancakes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing those memories! Sounds like you had a good time, in spite of being the youngest.
DeleteHello everyone:
ReplyDeleteIf you or your parents or siblings did attend a Jewish summer camp in VT, please let me know where and when.
Thx
